Nathan A. Bicks named one of America’s Best-in-State Lawyers by Forbes

Nathan A. Bicks
Nathan A. Bicks, a member of Burch, Porter and Johnson, PLLC in Memphis, Tennessee, has been named to the inaugural Forbes Best-in-State Lawyers 2025 list, recognizing his practice in government relations. The list highlights accomplished attorneys in private practice from across all 50 states. Honorees were determined based on a rigorous, multi-stage process of editorial research and analysis to identify the finest members of the legal profession: lawyers with impressive track records in their specialties, leaders in their fields, and attorneys most respected by peers and clients. Bicks is one of only seven Tennessee lawyers listed.
Bicks represents clients across a broad spectrum of dealings with the government. As a litigator, his practice focuses on complex litigation, with particular emphasis on white collar crime, healthcare fraud, and commercial disputes. He has extensive experience in defending individuals and companies under federal investigation, including directing internal investigations, negotiating non-prosecution and plea agreements, developing corporate compliance programs, and representing clients at trial. He also has experience in regulatory affairs and represents clients at all levels of federal, state, governmental agencies and boards, particularly in land use matters, where he is widely recognized as one of the region’s leading practitioners. A former legislative assistant and press secretary to U.S. Representative Harold Ford, Sr. (1979-1982), Bicks is currently the Town Attorney for the Town of Collierville, TN, one of Tennessee’s fastest growing municipalities. His recent work also includes brokering a fiber optic deal with the Blue Suede Network and Meridiam poised to bring $700 million in economic growth and over 2,500 jobs to Memphis, TN.
In a statement this week, Doug Halijan, Managing Partner of Burch, Porter & Johnson, PLLC, said “We are proud, but not surprised, to see Nathan recognized by Forbes. He is a true leader in his field — clients with business before governmental entities know to call Nathan when they need experienced, thoughtful and expert representation.”
In recognition of this honor, Bicks stated, “It is always flattering to be recognized, but the critical factor in delivery of the highest quality representation to our clients is the remarkable team and resources available here at Burch, Porter & Johnson. I am fortunate to be able to collaborate with lawyers who are highly skilled and experienced in many areas of practice.”
A past Managing Partner and member of the Management Committee of Burch, Porter and Johnson, PLLC, Bicks has served on a variety of boards and counsel positions in the Memphis community, including the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art, LeMoyne-Owen College, Memphis Jewish Community Center and the Bornblum Solomon Schechter School. Bicks earned his undergraduate degree from Brown University and his Juris Doctorate from Georgetown University.
